MONO in Japanese means “things”. For example, tsukemono literally means “pickled things” (pickles). These notes focus on any interesting objects that can be seen or used at Koyasan Space.

Japan is home to an extensive range of arts and crafts, and even with concerted effort one can barely scratch the surface in terms of knowledge or visual experience. We select for our readers details that are less well known outside Japan. We hope these short, original pieces convey our enthusiasm for well-made things and encourage your own curiosity and delight.

MONOとは、日本語で「もの」を意味する語である。たとえば「漬物」は文字どおり「漬けたもの」を指す。本欄では、高野山空において実際に見ること、あるいは用いることのできる対象物のうち、特に注目すべきものを取り上げる。

日本には多様な芸術・工芸が存在し、相当の努力をもってしても、その知識や視覚的体験の全体像に触れることは容易ではない。本稿では、日本国外ではあまり知られていない諸側面を選び、紹介することを旨とする。これらの短い覚書が、よく作られた「もの」への関心を伝え、読者各位の探究心を喚起する一助となれば幸いである。
